Ginny Baughman

Artist's Narrative

Ginny Baughman Ginny Baughman is a content based visual artist, who allows her subject matter to dictate her choice of media. She has a BFA from the University of Dayton and an MA in Art Education from Ohio State University. Ginny has worked in a wide variety of media and styles and gained notoriety as an artist through her architectural portraits. Then she moved onto create more contemporary multidimensional artwork. These artworks include three dimensional paintings, found object sculptures, paper sculpture, fiber and installation that relate to different aspects of everyday life from motherhood, to religion, to global warming. She continues to work in both traditional and contemporary styles and her artwork has been included in a wide variety of shows. Ginny has been a teaching artist in central Ohio during the past 17 years. Her own artwork is continually re-energized by new insights from her students.

Programs Available

Installation Art (Grade levels K-12)

Artist Ginny Baughman will share the excitement of creating an installation then she will guide students through the creation of installation in their classroom or school. Students will collaborate as a group to come up with a theme, bring objects related to that theme for the installation and then help Ginny create an installation based on that theme. Students will also be encouraged to create a book and write about the theme and objects for the installation. At the end of the residency, there will be an art exhibition to show off the installation and the student’s books.

Scope

This residency has 5 sessions and culminating event. Each session will need about 1-2 hours but can be condensed into fewer sessions by extending time of each session. Artist might need extra time to work on installation without students.

Message Mural (Grade levels 4-8)

Students will be able to collaborate to create a theme and then put that theme into action to create a class mural. They will learn about different mural artists and then they will learn about how to design and create mural of their own. By the end of the class they will cooperate as a class to create a classroom mural that best fits the class theme. As a group will also create message that goes with the mural that can then be communicated to the viewers through the mural. Each artist will be expected to contribute to that message through their art works, writing, and research about the topic.

Pop-up Problem Solving (Grade levels 1-8)

Students will learn how to bring stories to life through pop-up creations. They will learn pop-up techniques and then incorporate problem solving skills create their own weird and wonderful books with stories that pop right off the page.

Scope

1-3 sessions depending on which Pop-up program is chosen

Art Write (Grade levels K-12)

In many ways writing is almost as important to visual artists at their art. An artist must learn how to express him/herself verbally as well as artistically. An artist is often required to write effectively about his/her art, expressing verbally what it means to them and/or their public. In this residency artist Ginny Baughman will share her experiences with writing about the visual arts. Students will spend time creating art and then learning how to write about the art that they have created.

Scope

This residency has 2 sessions: one for creating the art and the second one for writing about the art.

Drawing the History of Time (Grade levels 4-12)

Visual artist Ginny Baughman will guide students on a journey back through time to learn how drawing helped to shape history through classroom discussion and projects. Students will experience what it must have been like before there was any way to reproduce images and have a renewed appreciation for the reproduction technology of today.

Scope

This residency has 7 sessions, but schools could choose to do just one, two, or three sessions to make the residency shorter. Each session will need about 45-60 min.

Drawing the History of Local Buildings (Grade level 4)

Students will learn about local history by rendering its local buildings and landmarks. Visual artist Ginny Baughman will take students on a drawing journey to learn more about local buildings and landmarks. Students will draw from life or photos and do research and write a short history of their building or landmark.

4 sessions and a cumulating event, 45-60 min. per session

Ukrainian Egg Decorating (Grade levels K-12)

Egg Decorating Demonstration

In this half day program students will learn how to create Pysanky or Ukrainian Eggs. Artist Ginny Baughman will give a demo of the ancient art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating. Students will learn some of the history of the art as well as how these beautiful eggs are made. The demo begins with showing the students how to blow out an egg and then proceed on to a demonstration of the art of egg decorating.

Egg Decorating Workshop

In this one day workshop students will learn how to create Pysanky or Ukrainian Eggs. They will learn some of the history of the art as well as how to make these beautiful eggs. Then they will have the opportunity to create an egg and take it home with them at the end of the workshop.

Ultimate Recycling (Grade levels K-8)

Artist Ginny Baughman will teach students about recycling through art. Students will learn how to give new life to “trash” by creating exciting “recyclable art” with objects that they save from their trash. Students will be given a theme and guided on how to create an artwork that best expresses that theme.

Plan Your Own Visual Arts Residency (Grade levels K-12)

Artist Ginny Baughman will work with schools to plan their own visual arts residency. Ginny will come into the school or classroom and teach or direct an activity that includes any of the skills listed in her other residencies including but limited to: drawing, mural making, found object sculpture, installation, verbal and visual arts, art history, and egg decorating. Ginny will work directly with teachers to get the residency that they desire.
