Brother Michael O'Malley The Mindful Storyteller With over 100 hours worth of stories in his repertoire, Brother Michael O'Malley brings the sacred stories to life with mindfulness. For nearly 25 years, Brother Michael has been inspiring students, teachers and school communities with his storytelling performances, school-wide assemblies, family night programs, classroom workshops, professional development seminars and one-week and two-week residencies. And now Brother Michael integrates mindfulness exercises and mindfulness practices into all of his programming.

Programs Available

The Mindful Author Visit (Grade levels K-8)

Brother Michael the Mindful Storyteller is the author of the acclaimed children’s book, An Irish Tale:  Tom Moore & The Seal Woman.  The Irish newspaper The Avondhu says, “[He] breathes fire into the old Irish legends…The Tom Moore story is told so well that you can almost hear the sound of the sea crashing onto the rocks.”

During Brother Michael’s full-day Author Visits, he discusses his book and offers programs that integrate story writing, story telling and mindfulness practices.  Programs include mindful writing workshops, presentations about the Tom Moore book, question & answer sessions and storytelling performances that integrate mindfulness practices.

Note: Two schools may share a one-day Author Visit.  You may arrange for Brother Michael to visit one school in the morning and the other school in the afternoon.

Storytelling & Mindfulness Performances (Grade levels K-12)

Brother Michael draws his stories from the Blood, Spirit and Land Ancestors:  Irish Tales, Slovak Stories, Christmas Legends, Earth Mother Stories, Family Stories, Wisdom Tales and more. Each storytelling performance is tailored to the age range of the audience and to the school's specific needs. Each program also integrates mindfulness practices into the performance, introducing audiences to the power of story and the power of mindfulness.

  • Requirements: Elementary schools often schedule a primary and intermediate program; middle schools often schedule one program per grade level.

Writing, Mindfulness and Storytelling Workshops (Grade levels K-12)

Mindfulness & Stress Reduction – Mindful Presence, Stories, Ease and Story Listening (Grade levels K-12) Brother Michael teaches students specific and age-appropriate mindfulness practices that promote ease, reduce stress and create the space for story listening and learning. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students.

Zen & the Art of Story Writing - The Mindful Practice Of Keeping That Pencil Moving (Grade levels 3-12) Combining storytelling, creative writing and mindfulness practices, Brother Michael shares original tales and describes his personal writing strategies, while leading students through mindfulness exercises and the writing process. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students. 

Storytelling & Mindfulness for Young Tellers - Be the Mindful Storyteller! (Grade levels K-12) Brother Michael leads an assortment of highly interactive workshops that teach students how to "tell the tales" with mindfulness.  Introductory, intermediate or advanced levels are available. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students. For more extensive mindful storytelling training, ask Brother Michael about his residency programs. 

Mindful Stories for the Earth Mother - What's Science Got To Do With It? (Grade levels K-8) Brother Michael combines the art of storytelling with hands-on science experiments and mindful awareness to educate young people about environmental issues. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students.

Brother Michael has a range of entertaining storytelling programs available that highlight mindfulness exercises that families can practice together, along with inspiring families to read together and share family stories in the home.

Mindfulness in the Classroom

Drawing from his experience as a classroom teacher, storyteller and mindfulness practitioner, Brother Michael leads professional development seminars that help teachers reduce stress and increase mindfulness in their personal and professional lives. Brother Michael also offers specific tools for bringing mindfulness to the students in the classroom.

 

Confronting "Screen Addiction" with Mindfulness

"Screen Addiction" refers to the modern epidemic of children (and adults) spending more time staring at smart phones and electronic screens than they do in face-to-face interactions. Studies associate "screen addiction" with shorter attention spans, lack of social skills and even depression. Drawing from his experience as a classroom teacher, storyteller and mindfulness practitioner, Brother Michael leads professional development seminars that addresses "screen addiction" and how teachers can begin to employ mindfulness practices, storytelling, story writing and story listening to counter this modern epidemic.

One Week and Two Week Storytelling, Story Writing & Mindfulness Residencies: This is THE BIG ONE! School-wide storytelling performances, interactive small-group mindfulness exercises, student writing, student performances and much more are available with Brother Michael’s full-week residences. All residencies include an emphasis on stories and mindfulness. Each residency is planned and tailored to meet the school's specific educational objectives.
