Wrapping or coiling is the process of wrapping one thing around another. In the classroom, we wrap yarn and other fibers around jute. The children select which colors they want to use. In many cases, students choose exciting and unusual color combinations which add vitality to the artwork. The artist teaches students several variations of wrapping that create patterns and designs. Younger students, grades 1-3, make a small wrapped piece that they may keep. Older students make a wrapped figurative piece that they may keep. Students seem to love this experience and take good feelings about the creative process with them. There are three main aspects of the workshop that are of value to students:
- Students become familiar with different materials.
- Students learn techniques that can be applied on their own.
- Students learn the importance of expressing themselves and experience the joy of being successful with their creative efforts.
